The first update for Logic 8 came out today. Main changes are:

• New KC: Hide/Show Transport
• Copy/Paste Audio Configuration (Mixer local menu: Options)
• Different colors for new Giant SMPTE and Bar displays
• Improved handling of open take folders (flattening, recording into)
• Remote support in Leopard
• Glue Tool works in Piano Roll

Unfortunately, some users already report that many bugs from 8.0 are still not fixed, and that new bugs appeared along with that update.

Note that the Logic Pro 8.0.1 update also includes Waveburner 1.5.1 and Impulse Response Utility 1.0.1.

According to our informations, the first update for Apple’s Logic 8 should be available in a few weeks.

Select users are already able to download a beta version of the update; the final version will then probably come once testing is over, probably in a few weeks.

Logic 8, which came out in September this year, hasn’t yet been updated although many users have experienced critical bugs. Expectations are high for this first update to fix the biggest issues.

More than two years and a half after introducing it at NAMM 2005, MOTU released the (long orverdue) new version of their MachFive sampler.

In the crowded world of samplers, MachFive brings a bunch of great features, including:

• Multi-platform (Windows XP, Vista, Vista 64 bit - Mac OS X Universal Binary);
• Edit and create REX, ACID and GarageBand loops;
• More supported formats, including GigaSampler (1, 2, 3), EXS 24, Kontakt (1, 2) - without conversion;
• 32GB of included sounds, including a 24-bit 96Khz piano and VSL orchestral samples;
• Multi-channel (stereo, quad, 5.1, 7.1);
• Plug-in formats: MAS, AU, VST, RTAS, DXi.

MOTU clearly wants MachFive to play a bigger role in the film scoring industry: indeed its compatibility with GigaStudio samples will give many Mac-only film composers access to the gigantic collection of libraries without having to use a PC (which was and still is a deal-breaker for many). Time and tests will tell if this works as advertised.

Also interesting is the possibility to edit and create loops in various formats. Providing that the interface is clear and easy to use, MachFive might well become the de-facto tool to play with loops.

As MOTU said at NAMM 2005, upgrades will be free if you bought MachFive after January 20, 2005. Good to hear they sticked to their word! Other MachFive v1 users can get the upgrade for $195. Check out MOTU’s upgrade page for more info.

Magma introduced a few days ago a groundbreaking product: the ExpressBox1 is a PCI Express expansion system for laptops featuring an ExpressCard|34 slot (which is the case on most PC and Mac high-end laptops).

Two models are available; the base model supports cards up to 6.6 inches long, while the “Pro” model supports cards up to 12.2 inches long. Both models provide dedicated power and cooling, and are fully compatible with Windows XP, Vista and MacOS X.

This 0-latency expansion system means that audio users should now be able to use high-end audio cards like MOTU’s PCI-424 or RME’s HDSPe cards. Other possibilities also open up, like adding a second graphic card.

The ExpressBox1 base model retails at $729 while the “Pro” model retails at $749.

Apple yesterday updated its line of professional desktop computers, with the addition of the new dual quad-core Mac Pro. Besides it’s two quad-core 3Ghz processors, it is similar to other Mac Pro models, and is only available as a built-to-order option. It’s price tag is $1500 more than the base, dual-dual-core 2.66Ghz model.

Note that although this considerably raises the bar in terms of raw performances (8 cores @ 3 Ghz!), most applications are not developed to support 8 cores. Only a few of them actually supports 4 cores (Logic Pro being one of them). It is not known yet how these 8 cores will improve audio software performances, and we will have to wait for the first batch of users to get an idea of the real benefits of adding cores to processors.

Vienna Symphonic Library just came out with a new product which will appeal to many composers out there: a stripped down edition of their flagship sample library, Vienna Instruments.

Vienna Instruments Special Edition is an All-In-One collection containing basic articulations from 63 instruments (solo and ensemble strings, solo instruments and ensembles of the brass section, woodwinds ranging from piccolo flute to contra bassoon, harp, drums and percussion as well as celesta and the Bösendorfer Imperial grand piano).

All string and wind instruments include the Legato Performances patches, which automatically play real transitions between notes, to create a realistic legato effect.

What makes this Special Edition especially interesting is its price: $445 for the Standard Library (28 instruments) and $595 for the Extended Library (35 instruments). In other words, $1,040 will get you a full library with basically all you need to start creating quality mock-ups in your sequencer.

This product seems to be a good compromise and will surely answer most composers’ basic requirements from an orchestral library.

I am a bit swamped these days, but I wanted to share an interesting piece of information for Logic Pro users who would like to slave their Auricle computer to their favorite sequencer, without using Pro Tools.

There was a huge lack of documentation on the Internet about this, so after spending days setting it up along with numerous calls to Richard Grant (Auricle’s co-creator) and a dozen emails to MOTU’s tech support wizard Dave Roberts, I thought that an article on the process of Slaving Auricle to Logic Pro could be of interest to others trying to achieve the same thing.

According to this post on the VSL forums, the next version of FX-Teleport should be released at the end of March / beginning of April. This major update is stated to bring the long-awaited Mac compatibility.

FX-Teleport is currently the most reliable way of transferring audio via a classic Ethernet network. It is being used by many composers in the field. Unfortunately, version 1 only works on Windows computers.

Here’s the original quote from Andy (FX-Max.com):

“We’re close, but I am afraid we won’t be able to deliver it earlier than late March – early April… Maybe a bit earlier, maybe a bit later… You got the idea… We are working on a brand new version which will incorporate some really innovative ideas, therefore a huge delay (we originally planned to release it long time ago).”

Right now, the only solution for Mac-owners is to use Wormhole. FX-Teleport is however, and in many ways, a superior product; its arrival on the Mac platform is long overdue!

On January 5th, AudioEase released the long-awaited Altiverb 6, which brings compatibility with Intel-based Macs and with Pro Tools TDM hardware on Mac OS X, as well as a many new features.
